A 24-year-old Lockport man was sentenced to 40 years to life in prison for a murder in the city in 2023, the Niagara County District Attorney’s Office said Tuesday. Joshua Z. Chandler shot and killed 27-year-old Rakeem Hamilton in Lockport on July 2, 2023.
A Niagara Falls man has been found guilty after a 31-year-old was shot in the torso in March of 2024. Jalik George, 29, was convicted of second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
Crime rates have gone down significantly in the City of Buffalo, Acting Mayor Scanlon said Tuesday. 27 homicides were recorded in Buffalo this year, down 29 percent from 2024 and 51 percent from the five year average. Vehicle thefts and property crime are down 26 percent and 12 percent respectively.
Voters in the Royalton Hartland school district on Monday voted down a proposed capital spending project whose centerpiece was a $15 million field house to create additional space for student athletics. According to district clerk Jenna Snell, Proposition No. 1 failed on a 258-572 vote.
