A new, coordinated effort to address homelessness is underway in Lockport with the formation of the Lockport Homeless Alliance, a group comprising local leaders, advocates, and residents who say the problem is growing and requires a more unified response.

Community members pitched in almost $14,000 in the third week of the holiday season-timed fund drive for Sister Mary Loretto Memorial Community Soup Kitchen. As of Dec. 19, the fundraising total stood at $27,933. The goal set by the Lockport Salvation Army is $50,000.

A Cheektowaga woman is facing multiple charges after a pedestrian was fatally hit in Amherst Saturday night. Jennifer A. Ortiz, 57, was arraigned and charged with one count of Vehicular Manslaughter in the 2nd Degree, one count of Leaving the Scene of an Incident Resulting in Death, and one count of Driving While Intoxicated.

Amherst republican Dan Gagliardo announced his plans to run for state senate Monday. Gagliardo most recently lost the election for Amherst Town Supervisor to democrat Shawn Lavin.

Local doctors are sounding the alarm as health officials warn this year’s flu season could be especially severe. According to infectious disease expert Dr. Thomas Russo, last year was the worst influenza season in over two decades, and this one might be even worse.

The Buffalo Bills are once again going to the playoffs. As a result of the Indianapolis Colts’ 48-27 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Monday night, the Bills officially clinched a spot in the postseason. The Bills (11-4) are guaranteed to at least have a wild-card spot.

A Buffalo man has now been charged in connection with a third murder after he killed two women in the city almost twenty years apart. Richard Fox, 62, is accused of killing 32-year-old Crystal Curthoys, of Lockport, in Niagara Falls. In November, he was sentenced for murdering 40-year-old Cassandra Watson and 50-year-old Marquita Mull. The alleged murder of Curthoys occurred in January 2023.

A 16th Street man was taken into custody on weapons possession charges following a raid initiated by a stolen car investigation at a 16th Street home on Friday.
Once entry was made, the vehicle in question and three other vehicles were seized. Also found in the home were five illegal guns and more than $10,000 in cash, as well as fraudulent paperwork for all the vehicles.

A 70-year-old woman is dead after being struck in a hit-and-run crash on Kensington Avenue Saturday evening, according to Amherst Police.

City officials have approved a new five-year collective bargaining agreement with the Niagara Falls Fire Department Officers Association, clearing the way for wage increases and a series of benefit and work-rule changes for department leadership through the end of the decade.

North Tonawanda police are investigating the circumstances around a car driven into the Niagara River on Friday night. Shortly after 9 p.m., NT police and firefighters responded to Gratwick Park for a report of a vehicle in the water. Upon arrival, police found a 2008 Subaru Impreza in the river, about 15 feet from shore. The male driver was able to get out of the vehicle and get to shore on his own.

A 70-year-old woman is dead after being struck in a hit-and-run crash on Kensington Avenue Saturday evening, according to Amherst Police. Police said it happened in front 1970 Kensington Ave. around 6 p.m. Saturday when a 57-year-old woman driving a 2022 Jeep Compass hit the 70-year-old victim who was in the roadway.

A 16-year-old boy from West Seneca was killed after being struck by a pickup truck Thursday night in West Seneca. The crash happened Thursday on Clinton Street, The teen was struck by a pickup truck driven by a 27-year-old man from Depew. Emergency medical personnel transported the victim to Erie County Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. Police said the investigation is ongoing and that no criminal charges are anticipated.

Buffalo is no longer moving forward with a proposed animal shelter on Niagara Street, according to city officials. Fillmore District Councilman Mitch Nowakowski said while talk of a new shelter has circulated for months, nothing became “real” without a formal proposal coming before the Common Council.

Federal investigators are trying to figure out why a business jet carrying retired NASCAR driver Greg Biffle and six others tried to return to a North Carolina airport just after takeoff but plowed into trees short of the runway, killing everyone on board. The Statesville airport will remain closed as the NTSB performs its investigation.

A Buffalo man was given 25 years to life in prison Thursday after he shot and killed a man last year, according to the Erie County District Attorney’s Office. Around 11:30 p.m. Sept. 6, Alfonzo Quinney, 49, shot and killed 28-year-old Elijah Mingo on the 100 block of Northland Avenue.

Lockport Common Council unanimously approved local landmark status for the 160-year-old Gothic Revival house of worship. The landmark application was submitted to the council by Selena Truax Morello, chair of the City of Lockport Historic Preservation Commission.

The City of Buffalo is scrapping it plan to build a new animal shelter at 1294 Niagara Street. DPW Commissioner Nolan Skipper says the focus heading into 2026 will shift to making improvements at the existing animal shelter.

The Niagara Orleans Central Labor Council delivered the last of its gifts for adopted families this year. In total, the union organization had adopted 38 Niagara County families through Community Missions’ Holiday Help Program, the Salvation Army of Niagara Falls, and the 107th Attack Wing stationed at Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station.

Lockport police are looking for information on a 53-year-old city woman who was last seen on Oct. 3. Carleen A. Stover, who’s described as a 5-foot-8, 150 pound woman who was last seen in a pink shirt, black pants, black shoes and black purse. She’s possibly driving a 2010 Nissan Murano with a license plate of LHJ-5264.

A Niagara Falls woman has pleaded guilty to the murder of her mother in the city’s first homicide of 2025 and will spend 20 years in prison. Seleste Bomberry, 30, entered a guilty plea to first-degree manslaughter after admitting to stabbing and killing her mother, Gennie Blackwell, 48, on March 23 inside their apartment

Members of the Niagara Falls Police Department’s Emergency Response Team stormed a 10th Street home Wednesday night and took a 29-year-old man into custody following reports of a shooting. Police responded to a house in the 400 block of 10th Street around 8:45 p.m. for calls of an unwanted person. The call was upgraded to shots fired after it was reported that a man had fired a .22-caliber gun into a door toward another person. They were not hit by the gunfire.

A Buffalo woman was sentenced on Thursday to three years probation after she hit a teenager with a garbage truck last year and left him paralyzed. Sasiya Davis-Johnson was driving a garbage truck for the City of Buffalo “way too fast” and going in reverse down Rhode Island Street because she was running late on the morning of Oct. 2, 2024
