Haile allegedly strangled his girlfriend 29-year-old Katie Carrig to death before he allegedly poured gasoline and lit the home on fire.

The parents of a 4-year-old have been arrested after the child was found walking in traffic on I-90 in Silver Creek earlier this week, according to New York State Police.

A Buffalo man was found guilty by a jury for a 2023 murder outside of an apartment on Mortimer Street near Broadway. Avantae M. Ayala, 22, was found guilty of second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He faces a maximum sentence of 40 years to life in prison.

Nearly a year ago, Mayor John Lombardi III said that revenue from the city’s compost plant could be more than $250,000 annually. Last week, during a budget work session, the Common Council found that updated figures on the plant’s performance were hard to come by.

Human remains found near Erie, Pa. were identified as that of an Olean woman who went missing in 2024. The investigation determined that the remains were that of Rebecca L. (Foley) Hakes, of Olean, who was reported missing by her family late last year.

A woman who died in a crash on Union Road off of Route 33 Thursday night has been identified by Cheektowaga Police. Heather Cottone, 54, of Cheektowaga and two juveniles collided around 11:30 p.m. Cottone was ejected from her vehicle and died at the scene. The driver of the other vehicle and his passenger, both 15 years old, remained on scene.

Five adults and four children have been displaced after a fire in Buffalo late Sunday at 461 Herkimer Street.

Structure fire in Hamburg

A number of Southtown’s crews responded to a structure fire Saturday morning in Hamburg. The Lake Shore Volunteer Fire Company, in a social media post, said its crews were dispatched at 11:42 a.m. to the 500 block of Stewart Parkway, after reports of smoke coming from a home. Lake Shore officials said personnel arrived within two minutes and found smoke showing from the residence, confirming a kitchen fire. no one was home at the time.
