The union that represents the corrections officers and lieutenants who work in New York’s prisons knew a strike was fomenting among its membership before staff started walking off the job in February, and they say state officials did nothing when they were informed of the impending crisis.

In Buffalo, the JFK pool was closed for the summer after an incident involving an adult and a young lifeguard. The adult “physically assaulted and threatened a young lifeguard at the pool, causing staff to fear for their lives,” according to officials.

A Buffalo woman, 36 year old Carmen Martin, was sentenced to 1 1/3 to four years in prison after she killed a bicyclist and injured two others in a collision in June 2022.

The SPCA Serving Erie County is not accepting animals for the time being. On its website, the West Seneca location said it is at maximum capacity. The SPCA cited multiple animal cruelty cases and a lack of resources at the shelter as reasoning.

Nearly a dozen Puerto Rican flags have been stolen along Niagara Street on Buffalo’s West Side – days before the city’s annual Puerto Rican and Hispanic Day Parade.
